During the press conference for KBS2’s upcoming variety show Krazy Rich Korean held on June 10 at the KBS headquarters in Yeouido, Seoul, producer Lee Chang-soo shocked attendees by showing up in the exact same outfit and hat worn by Min Hee-jin during her much-publicized press conference. Maintaining his usual hairstyle, Lee’s bold move had the audience and cast, including Jun Hyun-moo, bursting into laughter.

Lee, known for hits like The Return of Superman, Boss in the Mirror, and The Seasons, explained the inspiration behind both his outfit and the new show. “I’ve always wanted to create variety shows that tackle social issues. Boss in the Mirror was inspired by the infamous ‘nut rage’ incident. Around a year ago, after watching Min Hee-jin’s press conference, I thought, ‘I could make a show out of that.’ That’s how Krazy Rich Korean came to be,” he said.

He continued, “Min Hee-jin really showed just how ‘crazy’ you need to be to succeed on the global stage. And as I looked into it, I found that a lot of successful Koreans abroad also had that kind of ‘crazy.’ That’s the core concept of the show.”

The show will spotlight the lives of unconventional yet globally successful Koreans, highlighting their eccentricity and bold ambition. Lee emphasized his love for variety formats that comment on social phenomena, comparing this to his previous work inspired by the notorious “nut rage” scandal.

Jun Hyun-moo, one of the show’s hosts, joked, “I almost injured my thigh during filming because we had to sit directly on the floor. As you can see, PD Lee Chang-soo is absolutely out of his mind. I’ve met a lot of PDs at different stations, but he’s the craziest—hands down. But it’s that kind of madness that gave birth to this show. He told us to dress luxuriously, and then gave us that kind of set!”

Despite the playful chaos, Jun was quick to praise the show’s fresh take. “At first, I thought, ‘It’s KBS—maybe it’s going to be another nationalist-type show,’ but it wasn’t. It could’ve been boring if done as a documentary, but presenting it as a variety show really worked. It’s a fresh shock that shows Koreans making their mark globally. I think this could shake up the Sunday night variety lineup.”

Krazy Rich Korean is set to premiere on June 15 at 9:20 PM KST on KBS2, and it’s already shaping up to be a wild ride, both on and off screen.
